The uterus, a female reproductive organ, is situated in the pelvic area between the bladder and the rectum. The cervix connects the uterus and vagina. It is divided in two parts:

  • The lower part is the uterus cervix, which is connected to the vagina.
  • The upper part is the uterus body, which is a hollow muscle that expands during pregnancy

Uterus cervix cancer affects the lower part of the uterus or the uterus cervix. According to the Globocan database (2002 World Health Organisation), uterus cervix cancer has been reported as the first female cancer in India, with 132,000 new cases every year and causing 74,000 deaths every year. It is reported to be the second most frequent cancer around the world with 470,000 new cases every year.
