Skin is constituted by 3 layers, which are from the outside to the inside:

  • Epidermis: it's the visible part of the skin, principally formed by keratinocytes that form a protective barrier. It also contains melanocytes that secrete melanin, responsible for the colour of the skin and the protection against the ultraviolet (UV) radiation. It's approximately 1 mm thick.
  • Dermis: it contains nerve ending, blood and lymph vessels, and is in charge of the skin's nutrition.
  • Hypodermis: it is rich in fat cells and assure thermal insulation.

Skin cancer is the most common form of human cancer. It is estimated that over 1 million new cases occur annually.
