Breast cancer is the one of the most common malignancies afflicting women. In some parts, it is the most common malignancy as far as cancer occurrence is concerned.

Breasts have glands whose function is to produce milk. Each breast is composed by lobules that secrete the milk and canals that carry the milk towards the nipple. The bigger part of the breast is constituted by adipose tissue that fills the spaces between the other breast components.

Milk is produced only during the breast-feeding period. Breasts are under influence of sexual hormones secreted by the ovaries from the puberty to the menopause. For example, oestrogens enable breast development during the puberty.

Great majority of breast cancers are adenocarcinomas, which means cancers developing from glandular tissues. They thus develop from canal cells, called as canalary cancer or from lobules, called as lobular cancer.                         More...
